Nick Osetek is a tattooer, illustrator, and printmaker currently working in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2016 from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina with a concentration in studio art and advanced printmaking. The 2 years following his degree, he taught woodshop foundations to incoming art students at Appalachian State, then completed a 6-month, sustainable printmaking internship at Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, Massachusetts.
Former helicopter mechanic and engineering technician, Osetek holds an appreciation for technique, process-involved mediums, and displays a meticulous sense of detail in his work. From illustration and film photography to wood and metal fabrication, the scope of his work covers an expanse of mediums but his focus lies in traditional works on paper; specifically graphite, ink, and print.
Mechanically-minded, Osetek has an affinity for the machines and equipment involved in the creative process. From simple tool repair to full tear-down restorations, his process feeds off of his ability to self-maintain his creative environment. By applying his DIY, fix-em-up attitude and skillset to his creative outlets, he creates a smooth-running, self-reliant workspace and breathes new life into old tools by transforming them into unique, functional works of art. Examples include “press-torations” of a 1949 Vandercook 4 letterpress for Zea Mays Printmaking, a 1960’s Dickerson Combination press mounted to an early 1900’s morgue cart, and most notably, a custom table-top press using the rotating assembly of a Subaru boxer engine, the Subaru Piston Press.
The subject of his visual work, on the other hand, draws inspiration from organic and mechanical compositions, contained chaos with moments of serendipity, and the darker elements of the world that exists within and without us. Through perspective and teetering compositions of turbulence and serenity, his work indulges complex emotions and relationships within nature; confronting humanity’s convoluted impact and identity with nature and with themselves.
